AGRICULTURAL ADJUSTMENT AND THE DIVERSIFICATION OF FARM HOUSEHOLDS IN CENTRAL EUROPE AgEcon
Chaplin, Hannah; Davidova, Sophia; Gorton, Matthew.
Survey evidence from three Central European Countries (Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland) is analysed to identify the degree of non-agricultural farm diversification and the factors facilitating or impeding it in individual farms. The effect of diversification on rural job creation is investigated. The results indicate that the level of diversification is relatively small and enterprise diversification by farmers is unlikely to generate sufficient new jobs and solve the problem of high rural unemployment. The attempt to transpose the Western European model of agricultural diversification to the acceding countries via the SAPARD programme is questionable, as non-farm centric rural policies appear to be more appropriate.

ASSESSING THE ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF NEW OR RECENTLY EXPANDED MANUFACTURING AND EXPORTABLE SERVICE FIRMS IN NORTH DAKOTA AgEcon
Coon, Randal C.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
This study examines the economic impacts that have resulted from new or recently expanded North Dakota firms in three sectors (agricultural processing, other manufacturing, and exportable services), addressing such dimensions as number of jobs created, compensation paid to employees, and the expenditures made to entities within the local area and elsewhere in the state. Information was obtained from a questionnaire completed by 42 new or recently expanded firms. The responding firms had added an average of 29 jobs from 1990 to 1996. General labor was the job category accounting for the largest number of workers overall (52 percent), followed by skilled labor (16 percent) and management (12 percent). About 65 percent of the firms' new jobs have been...

Job creation and job destruction in the EU agriculture AgEcon
Ciaian, Pavel; Dries, Liesbeth; Kancs, d'Artis.
This is the first paper to study job creation and destruction in EU agriculture. We disaggregate employment patterns and job flows into detailed intra-sectoral labour adjustment dynamics based on farm level panel observations from 1989-2006. We find that: (1) job creation and destruction rates in EU agriculture are high compared to other sectors; (2) there are important differences in job creation and destruction rates between different member states; (3) this can be attributed to differing initial farm structures: member states with small average farm sizes display higher job creation and destruction rates than those with larger average farm sizes.

ÜLTETVÉNYERDŐK SZEREPE A TÁVLATI FÖLDHASZNÁLATBAN AgEcon
Erdos, Laszlo.
